Peanut Butter Sweet Potato Chew Sticks: A Soft-Baked Treat Dogs Go Nuts For 🥜🐾

When it comes to homemade dog treats, we love recipes that combine natural ingredients with real health benefits—and this one’s a fan favorite at Alan’s K9 Academy! These Peanut Butter Sweet Potato Chew Sticks are chewy, flavorful, and packed with nutrients to support your dog’s digestion, joints, coat health, and more. They’re easy to make and perfect for pups who love to chew but need a softer, healthier alternative to commercial treats.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup mashed sweet potato (cooked, peeled, and soft)
  • 1/2 cup natural peanut butter (xylitol-free, unsalted)
  • 1 cup oat flour (or oats blended into flour)
  • 2 tablespoons ground flaxseed – adds omega-3s and helps bind the dough
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil (optional) – supports skin and coat health

Optional Superfood Add-Ins:

  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder – supports joints and reduces inflammation
  • 1/4 teaspoon ginger powder – gentle on the stomach and aids digestion

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 300°F (150°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, mix the mashed sweet potato and peanut butter until smooth.
  3. Add oat flour, flaxseed, and any optional supplements, stirring until a thick dough forms.
  4. Shape dough into long sticks by hand or use a piping bag with a large round tip.
  5. Place sticks on the baking sheet and lightly press to flatten slightly.
  6. Bake for 35–40 minutes, flipping halfway through for even texture.
  7. Let the sticks cool completely—they’ll continue to firm up as they cool.

Storage:

  • Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 5 days.
  • Refrigerate for 2–3 weeks or freeze for up to 3 months.

Why These Chews Are a Hit:

  • Sweet potato is gentle on digestion and full of vitamins.
  • Peanut butter offers flavor, protein, and healthy fats.
  • Flaxseed boosts omega-3s and fiber.
  • Great as a training reward, snack, or enrichment tool.
  • Optional turmeric and ginger give added anti-inflammatory and digestive benefits.

Each chew stick contains approximately 35–45 calories, depending on the size and ingredients used.
